$40M Myrtle Beach infrastructure project to close city access point through early 2026

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. (WBTW) — Crews are one week into construction of a massive project that will send stormwater far into the ocean while improving drainage at a key municipal beach access point.

The $40 million 24th Avenue deep water ocean outfall venture is being paid for with nearly $37 million in state aid. Once complete, an 84-inch diameter pipe will extend 1,500 feet into the ocean.

“Outfalls are important because remove stormwater pipes from the beach, help collect trash and filter water before it gets back into the ocean,” city officials wrote on Facebook.

A laydown yard for construction has been created between Withers Drive and North Ocean Blvd., keeping the 24th Ave. N. beach access point closed through early 2026.

Key dates for the project include:

  • Oct. 1: trestle construction
  • Nov. 15: junction box one construction
  • Dec. 9: coffercell construction
  • Dec. 30: excavation begins
  • Jan. 13: laying down of 84-inch concrete pipe

Since the late 1990s, Myrtle Beach has invested more than $75 million in stormwater management work, including four existing deepwater outfalls at 25th Ave. S., 4th Ave. N, 14th Ave. N and 53rd Ave. N.
