‘Questionable transactions,’ animal deaths among factors in Texas Tech rodeo coach firing

Early last week, the dean of Texas Tech’s Davis College of Agricultural Sciences & Natural Resources issued a letter to faculty, staff and students explaining why the Rodeo Program’s coach was fired.

According to the letter written by Dean Clint Krehbiel, former rodeo coach Jerrad Hofstetter was fired on Sept. 5 for reported financial and animal welfare mismanagement and failure to comply with university policies.

Through an open records request the Avalanche-Journal made to the university, documents show a history of nearly two years of alleged mismanagement of program finances and animals, providing context to university’s decision to fire Hofstetter.

The A-J has made numerous attempts to contact Hofstetter, but phone calls and text messages have been unanswered.

Texas Tech audit find nearly $240K in ‘questionable transactions’

A Texas Tech Unversity System audit report conducted by the Office of Audit Services on June 28, 2024 found that “given the lack of financial controls and the absence of supporting documentation for 75% of financial transactions, auditors could not determine if fraud, waste, or abuse occurred and could not substantiate the business purpose for numerous expenditures.”
