Huskers WR Carter Nelson celebrates ‘dream come true’ after first touchdown

A year ago, Ainsworth native Carter Nelson was playing 8-man football, lining up all over the field. On Saturday night, the true freshman scored his first collegiate touchdown to get the Nebraska Cornhuskers on the board against Northern Iowa.

That catch, a 24-yard strike from fellow true freshman Dylan Raiola — the first touchdown connection between two Huskers freshmen since 2018, when Adrian Martinez threw a 28-yard score to Maurice Washington — was one of a game-high four catches for Nelson on Saturday. He finished with 48 yards, second only to teammate Jaylen Lloyd (59), and now has seven catches for 69 yards on the season.

“Being able to do that and just being able to do that with those guys kind of just made every dream come true real quick there,” Nelson said after the game.

He added that it “was just amazing” being able to do it at Memorial Stadium with so many family members and friends in attendance.

Considered the top prospect in the entire state and a top-five tight end in the country in last year’s recruiting cycle, Nelson quickly moved to wide receiver upon joining the Huskers.
