NSP warns of social media scammers posing as government officials

LINCOLN, Neb. ( KCAU ) — After receiving numerous reports of scammers impersonating state officials, the Nebraska State Patrol is reminding citizens to remain cautious when communicating online.

According to a release, NSP describes the scam as originating from a lookalike social media profile for a government official. Once the scammer starts conversing with a potential victim, they move the conversation to a different communication or messaging platform. From there, the scammer attempts to convince the victim of an authentic and secretive agreement by initiating conversations that appear to be with the state official.
