Athletes throughout the Salem-Keizer area have turned out stellar performances during the early portion of the fall high school sports season.
This week’s Maps Credit Union high School boys Athlete of the Week nominees are:
- Justin Bell, West Salem cross-country
- Lucas Lee, South Salem soccer
- Romyl Luster, South Salem football
- Cruz Veliz, Woodburn football

Justin Bell, West Salem cross-country
At the Marist Invite on Sept. 7, Bell clocked a 5,000-meter personal best of 15 minutes, 47 seconds to notch a fourth-place finish in the boys’ field.
Romyl Luster, South Salem football
During South Salem’s season-opening win over North Salem, Luster caught 13 passes for 205 yards and two touchdowns. He also made a big impact at cornerback for the Saxons.
Lucas Lee, South Salem soccer
Lee provided a thrilling go-ahead goal for South Salem to help lead the Saxons to a 2-1 win over 5A No. 1 La Salle Prep on Thursday. The freshman forward lofted the ball over the keeper from approximately 27 yards out and banged it off the bottom of the crossbar and into the net for the winner.
