Tropical storm warning issued for Cape Fear region as potential cyclone swirls off the coast

Southeastern North Carolina is under a tropical storm warning because of a potential tropical cyclone swirling off the coast. The warning area includes Edisto Beach, South Carolina, northward to Ocracoke Inlet, North Carolina.

As of 11 p.m. Sunday, the National Hurricane Center said the storm was moving erratically off the coast and is expected to bring heavy rains and coastal flooding. The storm had maximum sustained winds of 45 mph and was located 125 east-southeast of Charleston, South Carolina.

The National Weather Service in Wilmington said flash flooding from excessive rainfall is possible over the next couple of days. The areas most likely to be impacted are rivers, creeks, streams and other low-lying and flood-prone locations.

On Sunday, people were out and about at Wrightsville Beach, even with rainy conditions. The small lot on Stone Street near One South Lumina hotel was nearly full with a few spots left.

The tide was on its way out and the water was rough. Some families were setting up spots to sit, but most people strolled up and down the beach just getting their feet wet. A few people also fished in Banks Channel and walked the Nesbitt Loop.
