Here’s what to know as Fayetteville faces wind and rain from tropical system

The Fayetteville area is under weather alerts as what’s known as Potential Tropical Cyclone 8 brings considerable rain to the Carolinas through Tuesday.

The National Weather Service issued a Hazardous Weather Outlook on Monday morning stating the system will cause “periods of moderate to heavy rain and windy conditions (that) may lead to scattered flash flooding and sporadic power outages. There is a limited risk of an isolated tornado (Monday afternoon) into the early overnight hours.”

A wind advisory, issued at 9:37 a.m. Monday, is in effect until 2 a.m. Tuesday, according to the National Weather Service in Raleigh. The advisory covers the Sandhills area, which includes Cumberland County.

According to the NWS, Fayetteville-area residents can expect northeast winds of 15 to 20 mph, including frequent gusts of 35 to 45 mph.

Cumberland County is also under a flood watc h, issued at 9:03 a.m. Monday and in effect until 8 a.m. Tuesday.

Residents in Cumberland County can expect widespread moderate to heavy rain which will result in 2 to 5 inches of rain with some areas receiving more than 6 inches — with the heaviest accumulation near Fayetteville.
