All-clear given at Paul D. Camp Smithfield campus after bomb threat

Smithfield Police gave the all-clear shortly after 11 a.m. on Sept. 16 after searching Paul D. Camp Community College’s Smithfield campus and the adjoining Luter Family YMCA in response to a bomb threat.

Deputy Chief Chris Meier said someone had called in a threat to the college’s Franklin campus but did not specify which of the college’s three campuses was being threatened, necessitating that police search all three.

Virginia State Police and K-9s assisted in the search. No bomb was found at the Smithfield campus.

Jeffrey Zeigler, director of institutional advancement for Paul D. Camp, said in an email that as of 11:15 a.m. Paul D. Camp’s Franklin campus had reopened to students and staff, while the Suffolk campus remains closed and “inaccessible until further notice.”
