Inquiry into death of recruit will not be handled by Worcester DA; conflict cited

WORCESTER — Citing a potential conflict of interest, the investigation into the death of a state police recruit from Worcester at the New Braintree training academy will not be handled by the Office of Worcester County District Attorney Joseph D. Early Jr.

Enrique Delgado-Garcia, 25, of Worcester, who died Friday from injuries sustained during a training exercise a day earlier, was a victim-witness advocate for Early’s office before leaving to join the state police.

“This is a heartbreaking and tragic loss,” an emotional Early said during a news conference at the Worcester County Courthouse Monday.

Early said the injuries occurred in a boxing ring during an exercise that was videotaped.

The case is part of the Worcester prosecutor’s jurisdiction, but the inquiry will be shifted to another county or agency, Early said. No decision has been made, Early said.

Early added that his office will make the ultimate decision on who will take over the investigation.

“We’re going to get someone to review this matter that does not have a stake in its outcome,” Early said. “We’re trying to keep this as transparent as possible.”
