No one injured after commercial shrimp boat crashes into Matanzas Pass Bridge

No one was injured after a commercial shrimp boat crashed into the Matanzas Pass Bridge on Monday, briefly closing one of the only two bridges to Fort Myers Beach.

The Lee County Sheriff’s Office posted on X shortly after noon, alerting the crash closed all travel lanes on the bridge after the vessel hit the structure. Fort Myers Beach fire announced around 2:40 p.m. traffic was again allowed.

The sheriff’s office said they are assisting the Florida Department of Transportation, as well as the U.S. Coast Guard on inspecting the damages.

The Florida Department of Transportation announced in a press release that the closure is necessary to allow bridge inspectors and the U.S. Coast Guard to conduct a safety inspection following the incident.

Officials said the vessel became lodged under the bridge.
