Man charged with pistol-whipping residents in Minneapolis shelter attack

A man involved in a Sept. 5 attack on a Minneapolis homeless shelter pistol-whipped two shelter residents and fired shots from a gun, which he illegally possessed, new criminal charges allege.

Robert Russell Brent III, 35, of Faribault, is charged in Hennepin County District Court with one count of a possession of a firearm by an ineligible person, two counts of 2nd-degree assault with a dangerous weapon, threats of violence and 2nd-degree riot in connection with the incident.

He’s the second suspect arrested and charged in connection with the ongoing investigation into the attack that displaced all residents of the St. Anne’s Place Shelter, which houses women and children.

Eureka Willis, 33, was charged Friday for allegedly shattering one of the shelter’s doors with a baseball bat during the incident.

According to charges, the altercation began when a group of women across the street from the shelter yelled at a shelter resident to move her car.

During the altercation, Brent III allegedly hit two of the shelter residents – both women – in the head with a gun before firing two shots into the air, causing the residents to run back into the shelter building.
