Austal USA awarded contract – new facility, jobs coming to Mobile

MOBILE, Ala. ( WKRG ) — An American shipbuilding company based in Mobile was awarded over $400 million in a contract and along with helping the company, officials say it is a game-changer for the region.

The General Dynamics Electric Boat awarded a $450 million contract to Austal USA. According to a press release , the contract will help the company expand its production capacity at its US shipyard.

“This contract award will fund Austal USA to enhance its existing infrastructure by designing, constructing, and outfitting a new module fabrication and outfitting facility at its Mobile shipyard to support the U.S. Navy goal of delivering one Columbia-class and two Virginia-class submarines annually,” the release said.

Mobile officials said that aside from the benefits to the company, the new facility will also benefit the local economy and create new jobs.

“Austal USA’s $450 million contract to expand submarine module production is a game-changer for the Mobile region,” Mobile Chamber President and CEO Bradley Byrne said. “This significant investment not only strengthens our local economy but also highlights the critical role Mobile plays in supporting U.S. naval defense.”
