San Tan Elementary principal in Gilbert honored for leadership

San Tan Elementary School Principal Ray Mercado was moved to tears during a recent routine staff meeting when Higley Unified School District administrators walked in with Grand Canyon University representatives to honor him with GCU’s K-12 Principal of the Month Award.

GCU selects one principal from across the state each month to highlight their positive impact on students, staff, and the community.

The initiative celebrates those who demonstrate creativity, innovation, and vision in advancing educational excellence and fostering a thriving learning environment. Nominations are accepted throughout the school year and must demonstrate contributions in STEM-related pathways and programs, character education and innovations designed to increase student success.

Mercado’s strong school culture amongst staff and students as well as flagship programs, including Leader in Me and Spanish Dual Language Immersion exemplified his dedicated leadership and commitment to quality education.

“It’s been a team effort,” Mercado said to his staff after receiving the award. “Without your support, none of this happens, kids don’t grow, and we don’t hear these amazing stories that we hear on a daily basis. So thank you everybody.”
