Monroe schools closed after Snapchat threat prompts investigation

Monroe Middle School in Eugene and the entirety of Monroe School District closed Monday due to a Snapchat threat.

Eugene Police and Benton County Sheriff’s Office were investigating the threat.

On Monday afternoon, the Monroe School District announced its schools would open and operate as normal on Tuesday.

“Law enforcement has conducted a thorough assessment and has determined that there is no credible evidence suggesting a real risk to our schools or students,” the district announced in a press release.

According to Benton County Sheriff’s Office, multiple agencies across the nation were assisting in the investigation, as it simply referenced “Monroe” and not a specific school, town or state.

Kelly McIver, 4J’s communications director, said that because the threat was not specific, officials weren’t sure if it was directed at Monroe Middle or Monroe, the district.

Eugene School District 4J announced the closure of Monroe Middle School on Monday morning. Monroe Middle Principal Sun Saeteurn sent a letter to parents and guardians.
