Mecklenburg County Commissioners set to vote on tax that would fund the Red Line project

MECKLENBURG CO. ( QUEEN CITY NEWS ) — Mecklenburg County commissioners will decide if they’ll officially support a sales tax increase to fund several transportation projects.

The legislation would cap spending on light rail projects at 40% of the sales tax revenue, but other funds from the tax would go to support bus rapid transit and fix roads in the county.

Charlotte City Council approves sending transit tax plan to General Assembly

The draft legislation for commissioners to consider says that in 20 years, the Charlotte region’s population will grow by 50% from 2.6 million to 4.1 million in 2045, according to a CLT alliance report in September 2021.

The town of Davidson voted to approve the legislation a week ago, and Davidson mayor Rusty Knox says people need to see the bigger picture.

“This is a moment in time for all of us,” added Knox. “Our region grows by 300,000 people per year. This is a once-in-a-generation opportunity. This is not about any one town, this is not about politics, this is about quality of life for all of our citizens.” The Mecklenburg County commissioner meeting is scheduled to start at 5p.
