‘Something has changed’: South Carolina gun rights group wants gun safety education in wake of Georgia school shooting

HORRY COUNTY, S.C. (WBTW) — South Carolina groups on both sides of the gun rights aisle are speaking out following the recent deadly high school shooting in Georgia.

Many are concerned with what’s being done to prevent a similar situation from happening in South Carolina.

Moms Demand Action said the U.S. needs stricter gun and safe storage laws. On the other side, South Carolina Carry, a gun rights group, said the focus should be put on the underlying issue of mental health, rather than guns as the problem.

“Of course, not everyone that has a mental health problem will become a mass shooter, but everyone that is a mass shooter clearly has a mental health problem,” said Dan Roberts, executive board member and outreach director with South Carolina Carry.

Officials said two students and two teachers at Apalachee High School were killed on Sept. 4 after a teenager opened fire. Nine others, including eight students, were hurt.

Roberts said one thing he could agree on with Moms Demand Action is these situations didn’t happen in the 80s and 90s, or at least not as often.
