Woman charged with fatally assaulting 89-year-old woman found dead during welfare check

A 37-year-old woman has been charged with fatally assaulting 89-year-old Leonor Gonzalez-Ortiz in her home in Hedgeville, according to the Wilmington Police Department.

Police said Gonzalez-Ortiz was found dead inside her home on the 400 block of S. Jackson St. during a welfare check on the morning of Sept. 3.

Wilmington police and the Delaware Division of Forensic Sciences determined that Gonzalez-Ortiz was assaulted, and arrested 37-year-old Cynthia Viquez for first-degree assault the following day. She was committed to Delores J. Baylor Women’s Correctional Institution “pending further proceedings.”

Her charges were updated Monday to first-degree murder and providing a false statement to law enforcement, according to police. She remains incarcerated on a bail of over $1 million.

Police did not say why Viquez was in Gonzalez-Ortiz’s home or what relationship, if any, the women had.
