1 dead, 1 injured after pursuit ends with shooting, police say

A high-speed police pursuit that began in Richardson and ended in Dallas on Monday afternoon ended with one person hospitalized, one dead by suicide, and three children left uninjured, police say.

The incident started when officers tried to pull over a “vehicle of interested” tied to a Kaufman County murder, Richardson Police Chief Chief Gary Tittle said.

“That vehicle then began to evade Richardson marked squad cars,” he said.

The chase crossed city lines into Dallas. As the pursuit intensified, the suspect began to open fire on the pursuing officers.

“The driver of the suspect vehicle then shot the adult female passenger of the suspect vehicle,” Tittle said.

He said witnesses told police the driver then shot himself. The vehicle eventually came to a halt on the southbound service road of Central Expressway.

Police said after the chase ended, they found three children, ages 17, 15, and 5, in the back seat. They were not injured.

“The Dallas Police Department, their special investigations unit, is actually handling the investigation of the shooting simply because it…occurring in their city,” Tittle said. “The Dallas County District Attorney’s Office, their public integrity unit, will be conducting a simultaneous review of the facts and material.”
