A day after fatal Colonial School District bus crash, police provide more details

One day after an 85-year-old man on a tractor collided with a Delaware school bus, Delaware State Police released details about the crash.

According to police and Colonial School District, just after 8:15 a.m. Monday, a school bus carrying seven students to George Read Middle School was driving north on Route 13 near Federal School Lane.

At the same time, the man was on the right shoulder of Route 13 in a John Deere tractor.

The man, who will be identified once family is notified, tried to turn left from the shoulder and cross Route 13, police said. He drove into the bus’s path, police said.

The 55-year-old bus driver was unable to avoid hitting the tractor, which caused the man to be ejected. He was rushed to a hospital but later died.
