Sen. John Kennedy attacks Arab-American advocate: ‘You should hide your head in a bag’

Louisiana Sen. John Kennedy baselessly accused a leading Arab-American civil rights advocate of supporting terrorists during a Senate hearing on Tuesday.

The Republican took aim at Maya Berry, the executive director of the nonpartisan Arab American Institute. Questioning whether Berry supports Hamas and Hezbollah, Kennedy told her: “You should hide your head in a bag.”

Berry was in Congress on Tuesday to testify before a Senate Judiciary Committee hearing focused on stemming hate crimes against marginalized groups. She did not let Kennedy’s accusations go unanswered.

“Senator, oddly enough, I’m going to say thank you for that question, because it demonstrates the purpose of our hearing today,” Berry said. “Hamas is a foreign terrorist organization that I do not support. But you ask the executive director of the Arab American Institute that question very much puts the focus on the issue of hate in our country.”

Here’s what else happened.
