On Sept. 3, 22-year-old Aamonte Hadley was found unresponsive and pronounced dead in San Francisco County Jail. On Tuesday, her family and community leaders spoke out calling for accountability.

“Justice would have been for her to be home with her family breathing,” said Cat Brooks with the Anti Police-Terror Project.

Hadley and another woman were charged with several felonies in connection to a series of armed robberies . Her family says she was young and made mistakes but shouldn’t have been placed in jail for two years awaiting trial.

“She deserved her day in court, she deserved her day in court, she deserved a chance to live,” said Hadley’s aunt Patrice Bolton.

District Attorney Brooke Jenkins in a statement says Hadley’s in-custody death is alarming and tragic. Jenkins added, “(Hadley) was detained pre-trial because of the public safety risk she posed and was charged with serious crimes. Casually attributing blame to me and my office for doing our job is not helpful.”
