Mecklenburg commissioners split on yielding parkland to create road extension, industrial development

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (QUEEN CITY NEWS) — The extension of a Mecklenburg County road to pave the way for an industrial park passed on a split vote Tuesday night.

There has been a rush of new and proposed development in one of the county’s last frontiers between the Steele Creek area and Interstate 85. In an effort to delicately plan for future construction outside of — for now — the Charlotte city limits, commissioners accepted a bid by providing county-owned land for the extension of Garrison Road.

With the vote, the road will connect West Boulevard to the north and Dixie River Road to the south near the future River District mixed-use village. Five industrial structures are planned on either side of the extension, and developer McCraney Property Company deems it necessary to alleviate traffic for the influx of vehicles coming for the businesses themselves and when new residents begin moving into the River District.

The county is providing 2.5 acres at the southern end to extend the road that currently has a dead end. The motion passed 5-4.
