Meals on Wheels prepares for bright future after wave of community support

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. (WBTW) — After many years of searching, Meals on Wheels of Horry and Georgetown County can start building a permanent location thanks to an anonymous gift that changed its future.

The nonprofit organization, which provides home-delivered meals and fellowship to the homebound, elderly and terminally ill, recently secured a $100,000 gift — funding that it has been working toward for years.

In addition to that money, a local family donated 20 acres near Highway 701 and Highway 22, and a local business, Vines Restoration and Plumbing, has verbally committed to help with construction.

“I wasn’t the only one praying for this, Meals on Wheels CEO Michael Snuggs said. “The whole community was praying for this. It can seem like you’re at the end of the road, nothing’s going to happen, there’s going to be no shift, there’s going to be no change. Then, all of sudden, boom.”

It’s been a tumultuous year for the Meals on Wheels. In December, officials announced the suspension of services after rent at the organization’s Singleton Road location doubled to $6,500.
