Erie police to inspect car as investigation ongoing in fatal pedestrian accident Saturday

Erie police traffic investigators plan to inspect a vehicle that struck and killed a pedestrian on Saturday night as part of the ongoing probe into the city’s seventh motor vehicle fatality this year.

The victim, identified by the Erie County Coroner’s Office as 38-year-old John Vancise, was pronounced dead at 12:04 a.m. Sunday at the scene of the crash, which happened at the intersection of East 12th and German streets.

Vancise, whom authorities said was hearing impaired, was walking across East 12th Street in the crosswalk shortly before 11 p.m. Saturday when he was struck by a 2013 Chevrolet Cruze that was traveling east along East 12th Street. The driver of the car had the green light, according to investigators.

The female driver stopped immediately after the accident and has been cooperative in the investigation, said Sgt. Thomas Dunmire, a city police accident investigator. The woman and a 2-year-old passenger in her vehicle were not injured in the accident, according to police.
