Bengals finally down in-state rival Boise State to continue best start in more than 20 years

BOISE − Sydney Hess said she knew it was going to happen.

The Idaho State sophomore setter might just have been the only one.

The Bengals not only won the Boise State Classic, but downed an in-state rival in the process. They capped the three-day tournament with a 25-13, 22-25, 25-15, 25-12 win over the Broncos, who have posted nine winning seasons, two Mountain West Conference championships and two NCAA Tournament appearances over the past 10 years, Saturday at Bronco Gym.

It was their first win over Boise State since 2015.

“I could tell you it’s just one win, but it’s really more than that,” said Idaho State coach head Sean Carter. “Boise State’s program has been at a level Idaho State hasn’t been in a while. So it’s obviously huge. Our girls are very excited.”

Especially considering how far the program has come in just one year.

Idaho State won just eight matches a year ago. It marked the fifth consecutive losing season − four of which were with single-digit win totals.

This season, ISU is already 7-2 − the best start in at least 21 years.
