Armless Menlo man adopts three-legged dog from Grimes shelter

GRIMES, Iowa — After a long journey, Leo finally found his fur-ever home with a family that knows exactly what he’s going through.

In July, a volunteer at Rescue Rehab Rehome , an animal shelter in Grimes found Leo abandoned in Bondurant. He was severely malnourished and had a broken leg that needed to be amputated.

The shelter was raising money from the community for Leo’s leg amputation .

Leo’s surgery was successful. The shelter wants to thank everyone who donated because the donations came within $5 of the surgery’s cost. Leo is now fully recovered and on Saturday, he was adopted by the Lose family from Menlo.

The Loses say Leo fits right in. In 2020, Steve Lose lost his arms and parts of his feet because of frostbite. He was in a car accident during a bad storm and was found 16 hours later in the cold.

Steve’s connection to Leo was instant.

“[Leo is the] only dog that’s not afraid of my hooks,” he said.

Steve and his wife, Missy, followed Leo’s journey on Rescue Rehab Rehome’s social media, and when Leo was fully recovered, they met him for the first time.
