West Valley City votes to rezone Redwood Drive-In for housing

WEST VALLEY CITY, Utah ( ABC4 ) — West Valley City voted to rezone the Redwood Drive-In Theatre and Swap Meet for housing in a Tuesday night city council meeting.

Despite opposition, the city voted to pass a motion to rezone the Redwood Drive-In Theatre, and people rallied outside the City Hall to show their disapproval of the council’s decision.

As the council passed the motion, some people began leaving the room. One person shouted, “We won’t forget this” as the council took its roll call vote.

Police were lined up outside the meeting room after the council passed the motion. Neighbors near the popular drive-in have been rallying for months to save the venue because of its place in a local swap meet.

“We need to make sure we are heard and change that. We need to make that a fact. We need to make sure that happens,” one community member said after the vote. “By next year, we have to make sure that that city council represents us, and does not represent industries and development, people that just come and dump all their money inside West Valley City and don’t care about the community.”
