Austin Police investigating after body found near Lady Bird Lake

AUSTIN (KXAN) — The Austin Police Department is investigating after finding someone dead in east Austin near Lady Bird Lake on Wednesday afternoon.

Around 2:57 p.m., Austin 911 received a check welfare call after a report of a body found along the trail in the 2700 block of Canterbury Street, APD Public Information Officer Cpl. Matthew Nonweiler said during a media briefing. Officers responded and found “an obviously deceased individual,” Nonweiler said

APD homicide detectives responded and conducted a preliminary investigation. The Travis County Medical Examiner’s office also responded. Preliminary investigation showed the person had no signs of trauma, there was no suspicion of foul play and Nonweiler said the case was not being investigated as a homicide this time.

Nonweiler also said the body was not retrieved from the water, and there was no indication the body ever was in the water. Police did not confirm whether the body was a man or a woman. He said the ME’s office would need to do a more in-depth forensic exam to narrow down a time of death.
