The city is cracking down on illegal license plates, otherwise known as ghost plates. Mayor Eric Adams says many have these plates to evade toll readers, tickets, and commit crimes. As of last week, a new 90-day task force was initiated to crack down on parked ghost car removal. Just five days into the initiative, 295 parked ghost cars were removed off New York City streets. Residents in East New York say ghost cars are a major issue for them. “There’s a lot of bad things with people driving ghost plates that rob people left and right they are making the block worse with parallel parking,” an East New York resident told News 12. The mayor says these cars have been used in many criminal incidents, including robberies and shootings. Over the next 90 days, the task force will get unregistered, uninsured and stolen, parked vehicles off the street. “Ninety days is just something that if the bad guys and the bad girls out there think ‘Oh, I can lay low in 90 days,’ we have another surprise for you,” said NYC Deputy Mayor for Public Safety Philip Banks. “Put your car out there on the 91st day and you will see what is going to happen.” Mayor Adams also says once these cars are off the street, New Yorkers will be safer on and off the roads. ”
