14-year-old Paul Breaux Middle School student arrested in connection with death of kitten on campus, officials say

LAFAYETTE PARISH, La. ( KLFY ) — A 14-year-old student at Paul Breaux Middle School was arrested and faces possible expulsion in connection with an incident on campus that resulted in the death of a kitten, the Lafayette Parish School System confirmed.

The student, who was not identified by the school system, was arrested and charged by law enforcement with cruelty to animals following the incident, LPSS said in a statement to KLFY on Wednesday.

After the arrest, the student was released to the custody of their parents/guardians, LPSS said.

LPSS said the student has been suspended, in accordance with district policies, and has been recommended for expulsion, pending a hearing.

“We take this matter very seriously and are working closely with law enforcement and all relevant parties to ensure that appropriate actions are taken in accordance with district guidelines and state law,” LPSS said in the statement.
