Federal grant means Newberg will get EV charging stations

Newberg is among the 17 cities that will receive federal funding to construct electric vehicle charging infrastructure to Oregon.

The U.S. Department of Transportation announced in early September that the city of Tualatin would receive $15 million in funding through the department’s Charging and Fueling Infrastructure Grant Program and that, in turn, that funding would trickle down to other communities.

Forth, a Portland-based EV advocacy group, worked with Tualatin officials to draft the grant proposal. The CFI program is part of the $91 billion Bipartisan Infrastructure Law passed by Congress in 2023.

The program’s intent is to “bring chargers to people with low to moderate incomes across Oregon’s north Willamette Valley,” a release from Forth said. “In doing so, it will help scale the nation’s charging network, reduce greenhouse gas emissions and address gaps in access.”

The devices will primarily serve residents who do not currently have access to at-home charging, with a focus on creating accessible chargers in apartment complexes and other public spaces such as libraries, parks and community centers.
