Southeast Erie neighbors launch legal fight over Perseus House youth treatment facility

A group of southeast Erie neighbors have initiated a legal fight over Perseus House Inc. ’s plans for a proposed new multimillion-dollar residential mental health treatment facility in their neighborhood.

A notice of appeal was filed in Erie County Common Pleas Court on Wednesday by Gordon McMichael, who lives in the 4100 block of Burton Avenue, near the property Perseus House is eyeing for its facility. McMichael and three other plaintiffs oppose the project.

The parcel is located at East 42nd Street and Dexter Avenue. Perseus House, which provides a variety of residential and educational programs and resources for school-aged youth, wants to develop the 4.5-acre vacant plot just north of East Grandview Boulevard.

Even though the Erie Zoning Hearing Board determined in July that Perseus House’s project is a “group home” under city zoning rules and a permitted use in that neighborhood, the neighbors’ court filing seeks to have a judge weigh in on that issue.
