Why Southern Living calls Stallings Island a ‘hidden gem’ and ‘unspoiled island’

Stallings Island, in Columbia County, has recently caught the attention of Southern Living Magazine and was named an “Unspoiled Island” In Georgia .

“It sits along the Savannah River and offers an endless variety of recreational adventures, a great quality of life for its residents, and expanding business opportunities,” said the article.

This island is located in the Savannah River near Augusta and the locals in town immediately think of donkeys when this island is mentioned.

The article said that the donkeys were brought to the island “to combat the coyotes and help protect the other creatures that inhabit the island, such as egrets, otters, and snakes.”

Currently four donkeys reside on the island. Due to strict trespassing laws, visitors must be accompanied by licensed guides to see the donkeys up close. Carrots and apples are some of the donkeys favorite snacks.

They serve as a living reminder of the importance of preservation, especially when maintaining a 16-acre archeological and ecological site with 5,000 years of history.
