Friends of Palm Beach to join global beach cleanup initiative Saturday

Friends of Palm Beach is inviting locals to join the organization for a Saturday beach cleanup as part of the 35th annual International Coastal Cleanup day.

The cleanup in collaboration with the student-led environmental nonprofit Surface 71 will run from 8:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. at 1576 S. Ocean Blvd., a mile south of the Southern Boulevard Bridge.

Students looking to improve their community service hours are in luck, as the cleanup will count toward their hours.

Supplies for the beach cleanup and ice-cold water will be provided, Friends of Palm Beach said. The organization is recommending that volunteers wear closed-toe shoes because of possible sharp objects in the sand.

The International Coastal Cleanup is an initiative created by the advocacy group Ocean Conservancy . The day is meant to encourage local beach cleanup efforts around the world and spread awareness of the environmental threat posed by marine debris.

To celebrate the occasion, Friends of Palm Beach will be giving out commemorative shirts to volunteers, but make sure to show up early, as they’ll be given out first come, first served.
