Developers look to add retail, townhomes to East State and South Mulford

ROCKFORD, Ill. (WTVO) — Developers Mustafa Abdall and Abdul Ahmed are looking for city approval to develop a convenience store, a grocery store and townhomes near busy streets in Rockford.

Abdall has done many projects in the area and Ahmed is best known for his partnership in a 7-Eleven franchise.

The two men are looking to develop behind Forest Plaza off of East State Street and South Mulford Road. They are calling it District 815. First Ward Alderman Tim Durkee met with them both and learned all of the project’s details.

“It’s theoretically a mixed development, but most of the project will be a series of townhomes,” Durkee said. “Along Mulford itself, it’s not advantageous to really put houses there or townhomes there because of the business of the street. So, there’ll be some commercial properties there, retail, possibly a 7-Eleven, possibly some other small stores.”

Durkee said the project is targeting those who are looking for affordable housing in the area.

“It sort of comports with people who are living in an apartment, don’t have a big enough down payment to be in a house and don’t want to be in a condo building,” Durkee said. “I like this townhome look, and I can afford that.”
