Dan Mullen Reveals the Coach He Told Florida to Hire After His Firing

Billy Napier’s job security at the University of Florida is under heavy scrutiny after a dismal start to the 2024 college football season. The Gators, already facing the nation’s toughest schedule, have dropped to 1-2 with five matchups against ranked teams remaining.

Florida has suffered three straight losing seasons for the first time in program history. Napier inherited a losing squad in 2021 and went on to finish 6-7 in 2022 and 5-7 last season. Gators fans have seemingly already had enough of Napier at the helm and have called for Ole Miss head coach Lane Kiffin as a potential replacement.

Enter Dan Mullen, who was fired in favor of Napier following four seasons in Gainesville. Now with ESPN as an analyst, Mullen recalled telling Florida athletic director Scott Stricklin who UF should hire in his place.

“It’s pretty funny. When I got let go at Florida a couple of years ago, they asked me and I said, ‘Hey, I’d go hire Lane Kiffin right now,'” Mullen said on “The Zach Gelb Show.”
