STAR credit checks now easier to access for New Yorkers

ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WROC) – If you’re a qualifying homeowner in New York State, chances are you’ve already received your STAR credit check for this year.

The Finger Lakes Region is seeing over $200 million in funding. Gov. Kathy Hochul has announced a new online portal where eligible New Yorkers who receive STAR credits can receive the money via direct deposit.

It’s a first in the program’s history, where homeowners won’t have to wait for a physical check in the mail.

Locally, just over 285,000 recipients are getting STAR checks this year. Gov. Hochul says two-thirds of those eligible have already received their funds across the state.

She says the portal will enable folks to see the money immediately, eliminating any burden associated with financial hardships.

“We want to meet taxpayers where they are. We wanted to make sure the people who deserve this relief get it immediately. No New Yorker should have to lie in bed at night and worry about these decisions and choices. They should not have to make a choice between the groceries, prescriptions, or being late on a payment. It’s just too hard sometimes,” said Hochul.
