New high school building opens in East Harlem

EAST HARLEM, Manhattan (PIX11) — A very special ribbon cutting marked the opening of a brand new high school building designed for more than 600 students in East Harlem.

Some say this is a new beginning for their community as the building is the first new East Harlem high school in over 60 years.

The free public charter school means no tuition and no financial requirement for students. The school is taking new students and 90 percent of the student body is from East Harlem.

The new 70,000-square-foot facility is massive, with state-of-the-art classrooms and an NBA regulation-sized gym.

The developments are all thanks to an unprecedented $125 million initiative led by the East Harlem Tutorial Program . They have three buildings offering year-round, community-based, educational programs, including afterschool and college readiness.

In the gym is a slogan: Begin with the end in mind. These students are beginning their journey to reaching their dreams.
