Construction ongoing for local shelter, resource center for homeless families

COLUMBUS, Ga. ( WRBL ) — Nearly three weeks into construction, a local project to help the homeless is that much closer to becoming a reality.

The idea for the Salvation Army of the Chattahoochee Valley’s Center for Hope began 10 years ago. It aims to help 17 local families take the steps to move from homelessness to self-sufficiency through a roughly six-month-long program.

“This is going to be a comprehensive program that’s really not just going to provide housing,” said Andre Pereira, Commanding Officer at the Salvation Army of the Chattahoochee Valley.

Once finished, the center will not only provide a place to live for 17 families at any given time, but also have health-, education- and technology resources. These services will come through partnerships with Goodwill and Columbus Technical College.

“[It’s] going to provide all the other resources that, a lot of times, families lack in order to self-sufficient and sustained,” Pereira said.
