WICHITA, Kan. (KSNW) — A teenager was charged in connection to the homicide of Jaden Wilson in March 2024 on Thursday.
Tyree Jackson Jr., 18, was charged with two counts of first-degree murder — one of which is in the alternative — criminal discharge of a firearm and felon in possession of a firearm. His father, Tyree Jackson Sr., was charged with first-degree murder and criminal discharge of a firearm on March 27.
Cases can be charged alternatively if there are two or more theories of how the crime was committed. Each charge can be presented to a jury, and a defendant may be convicted of more than one of the alternative charges. However, the defendant can only be sentenced for one of the alternative counts, that being the most severe offense. So, in this case, Jackson could be convicted of both first-degree murder counts, but he would only be sentenced for one.
The shooting happened on March 21 near the intersection of 21st Street and Grove in the parking lot of the M&M Smoke Shop. Police were flagged down regarding the shooting and found Wilson had been shot six times inside his car.
