Brixie faces new challenger in Republican Joshua Rockey for Ingham County House seat

LANSING — Three-term House member Julie Brixie , D-Okemos, is facing a challenge from a Webberville Republican in her bid for another term in the state House.

Local business owner Joshua Rockey is challenging Brixie for the seat that represents much of Ingham County, not including the city of Lansing and much of East Lansing or Lansing Township. Townships in the district include Locke, Leroy, White Oak, Stockbridge, Bunker Hill, Ingham, Wheatfield, Alaiedon, Vevay, Leslie, Onondaga and Aurelius. The district also includes portions of Meridian Township, and the cities of Williamston, Mason and Leslie.

Here’s what you need to know about the race:

Julie Brixie

Brixie lives in Meridian Township, where she has owned a home for 31 years. She is a Michigan State University graduate with a master’s degree in crop and soil sciences, and environmental toxicology. She was formerly Meridian Township’s treasurer for 10 years, and served on the board for 18 years. She was first elected as a state representative in 2018 and was reelected in 2020 and 2022. She defeated Republican Norm Shinkle, who this year is running for Ingham County prosecutor, with about 57% of the vote in her last election.
