Man found guilty in fatal stabbing at West St. Paul group home

A man has been found guilty in the fatal 2020 stabbing of David Eugene Rahn at a state-run group home in West St. Paul.

John C. Adams II, 43, was convicted of intentional 2nd-degree murder in Dakota County court on Wednesday in the death of Rahn, 68, who was found inside his room suffering from multiple stab wounds to his neck and back.

A staff member at the group home where the two men lived called 911 in the early hours of Feb. 17, 2020, to report a disturbance between two clients.

The staff member said she heard Rahn screaming for help from his bedroom. When she attempted to go inside, the door was blocked, and she heard another person say it was “ok.”

Once at the scene, a West St. Paul police officer saw a man later identified as Adams run from a place of worship across the street and into the home.

Officers that found Rahn attempted CPR until medics arrived, but he was pronounced dead at the scene.

Adams later claimed that Rahn had “busted into” his room and attacked him. He stated that the two had begun wrestling and that he had gotten a knife from the kitchen to defend himself.
