Prefontaine Classic track & field meet will take place over Fourth of July weekend

Don’t make your summer travel plans just yet, track fans.

The 2025 Prefontaine Classic will be held on July 5 next year — the Saturday after the Fourth of July — at Hayward Field, meet organizers announced early this week.

The annual Diamond League track and field meet will be celebrating 50 years since the June 7, 1975, debut of the Pre Classic, which was then known as the Hayward Field Restoration meet.

Athletes competing at the Pre Classic next summer will also have the opportunity to earn a bigger payday than what has been previously available.

The Diamond League, a series of 15 meets in 13 countries on four different continents every year from April to September, announced this week that it is increasing athlete prize money starting next season.

The Diamond League General Assembly voted on Sunday to increase the total amount of prize money paid over the course of the 2025 season to $9.24 million — almost a third more than what was offered each season from 2021-24.

Prize money awarded at the 14 regular-season meets will be $500,000 each, with $2.24 million available at the Diamond League Final.
