Fall River’s Nite Owl soars to next round for preservation funding. Here’s where it stands.

FALL RIVER — Nite Owl Diner flies high during Monday night’s meeting as the Community Preservation Committee bumped the renowned restaurant building to the next phase of eligibility for historic renovations, putting it one step closer to the requested $125,000.

Joseph Nasrallah has owned the now-shuttered restaurant at 1680 Pleasant St., at the intersection of Eastern Avenue, since 2002. It was originally built in 1956 and was a longtime fixture of the Flint neighborhood before it closed well over a decade ago.

It’s unclear whether Nasrallah will sell the diner, plus the wedge-shaped property behind it, after work is completed and the brooding owl hung above the building blazes neon once again.

For now, plans will be drawn up, minding some restrictions that go along with preservation efforts for sites that are deemed “historical,” Nite Owl being among those placed on the city’s Register of Significant Structures sometime last year.

Eligible renovations a hot topic of discussion
