Disruption, vandalism on UNC’s campus after ‘walk out’ for Pro-Palestinian protests: Officials

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. (WNCN) — Several buildings, including the ROTC Naval Armory building on UNC-Chapel Hill’s campus were vandalized after a “walk out” event during Pro-Palestinian protests Thursday afternoon, university officials said in a statement.

Officials said around 150 people gathered at the Wilson Library steps to protest. The event was promoted by UNC Students for Justice for Palestine, TransparUNCy and UNC Graduate Students for the Liberation of Palestine.

In a press release from UNC SJP, they said that they were protesting UNC’s “continued investments in zionist apartheid and genocide.”

Freshman student Devin Duncan said, “I heard the noise and I sort of just came out to see what was going on. They were marching through the hallways and in some of the buildings, they spray-painted. I appreciate the passion for the issue, whether I agree with it or not, but, I would encourage people to really be productive in their conversation, productive in their demonstrations.”

Said junior Ayush Pai, “I was a little disturbed, but I can understand people have some strong sentiments about the Palestine Israel moment.”
