Funeral date set for Enrique Delgado-Garcia, state police recruit from Worcester

WORCESTER ― The family of Enrique Delgado-Garcia, the state police recruit who died Sept. 13 after succumbing to injuries suffered during a training exercise , says his funeral will take place Sept. 27.

Jose Ramon Perez Garcia, the 25-year-old’s stepfather, said in an interview with the Telegram & Gazette Friday that Delgado-Garcia will be given full state police honors in the ceremony, from 4 to 8 p.m. at Mercadante Funeral Home, 370 Plantation St.

Burial will take place at 9 a.m. on Sept. 28 at Hope Cemetery, Perez said.

Perez said family members remember Delgado-Garcia as a hard worker who was determined to become a state police trooper.

He noted that his stepson was three weeks from finishing his training to become a state police trooper when he died during a boxing exercise on the state police’s New Braintree training grounds.

What hurts the family the most, Perez said in an interview in Spanish, is that they don’t have enough answers for what happened that day.

“We would like justice to be done,” said Perez, 60. “How can it happen that with one punch one kills a person in one boxing round?
