Justice Department files suit to stop Texas tax preparer from filing returns

WASHINGTON — The Justice Department filed a civil complaint today in U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Texas, seeking to bar John T. Ajuma, also known as John Trobisch, from preparing federal tax returns for others.

The lawsuit alleges that Ajuma prepared nearly 11,000 federal income tax returns from 2018 to 2024 through two sole proprietorships, “Destiny Tax Service” and “Momentum Tax Express,” both based in Hurst, Texas. The complaint accuses Ajuma of inflating refunds on a significant number of returns by falsifying deductions and credits, including unreimbursed employee expenses, child tax credits, and other tax benefits to which his clients were not entitled.

As a result of these practices, Ajuma is alleged to have caused the U.S. Treasury nearly $20 million in lost revenue from 2018 through 2022 by understating clients’ tax liabilities.

Deputy Assistant Attorney General David A. Hubbert of the Justice Department’s Tax Division made the announcement.

The IRS has resources to help taxpayers avoid dishonest tax preparers, including a directory of federal tax preparers and guidelines on what credentials to look for. Taxpayers can find this information on the IRS website .
