Campus vigil on Sept. 24 will memorialize TAMU-CC student Caleb Harris on his birthday

Community members are invited to attend a remembrance ceremony on Tuesday in honor of Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi student Caleb Harris, whose remains were found in a Corpus Christi wastewater well months after he was reported missing.

The vigil will be held from 7 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the Dr. Hector P. Garcia Plaza on the university’s campus on what would have been the student’s 22nd birthday.

Hosted by the Division of Student Engagement and Success and the Dean of Students, it will be open to the public and will feature a panel of speakers, including TAMU-CC President Kelly Miller, who will give opening remarks, and Kate Rodriguez, an alumna and adjunct professor of counseling, who will talk about grief, loss and healing.

Areas with stationery materials will be set up starting at 6:30 p.m. for those who want to leave messages for the Harris family. Guests who would like to leave messages are encouraged to arrive at the ceremony by that time.

“Caleb’s life touched the hearts of not just the Islander community, but the community as a whole,” said Claudia Amy Ayala, TAMU-CC associate dean of students, care and assistance, in a written comment to the Caller-Times. “On the day of the memorial, which is also his birthday, we will come together to honor his memory and pay our respects to the strength and dedication of his family, friends, and loved ones.
