Locally Heavy Rain, Strong Winds, and Marine Hazards Expected
09/20/24 1:50pm ET
Good afternoon everyone. In brief passing this morning, we mentioned the risk of scattered heavy showers & thunderstorms as tropical energy continues to sit over Florida.
As the afternoon sun works the atmosphere, along with high heat and humidity already in place, we are watching that action blossom in south Florida, the Florida Keys, and elsewhere along the west coast.
Areas around West Palm Beach, Ft. Pierce, Key West, and further up to Clearwater & Spring Hill, are seeing strong to locally severe thunderstorms lurking around these cities/towns. Slow movement of these storms will create a flooding hazard in poor drainage areas as torrential rain falls over the same spots for an extended amount of time.
As far as the severe weather aspect, we could see a few thunderstorms approach or reach severe limits. Since the action is scattered, not everyone will see big storms; but some areas could be in store for locally damaging winds, hail, frequent lightning, torrential rain, and the risk of a few waterspouts.
