Matt Rhule Facing Backlash For Baffling Decision In Nebraska’s First Loss

The Nebraska Cornhuskers have been rolling through the 2024 season, heading into Week 4 with a 3-0 record.

Despite leading for much of their Week 4 matchup against the visiting Illinois Fighting Illini, the Cornhuskers were hit with a late push from quarterback Luke Altmyer and Illinois. They suffered a 31-24 loss at home.

Nebraska coach Matt Rhule was under fire after collapsing late in the game. In the fourth quarter, with less than two minutes to go in the contest, Rhule called a timeout while the Cornhuskers were on defense.

He gave Illinois a chance to draw up a play without having to erase a timeout and it untimely led to a victory for the Fighting Illini. Rhule’s timeout helped Altmyer and the Illini run down the field and force overtime, which proved to be a costly mistake.

Following the game, fans were furious with Rhule’s decision. A ton of college football fans expressed their opinion about the timeout call, seemingly confused with Rhule’s game management.

“Matt Rhule what are you doing?? Call a timeout sooner than that lol,” said one fan.
